Chinese premier calls for balanced adjustment of population policy
When the Third Session of the 12th National People’s Congress came to a finish, on March 15, Premier Li Keqiang held a press conference for Chinese and foreign journalists. The Two-child Policy and family planning were among the hottest questions.
One reporter from China Central Television (CCTV) asked Li: “As China’s economic development enters a ‘new normal’ phase, people are also thinking about how we can balance our demographics and growth trends with this ‘new normal’. Last year, married couples got the right to have a second child if one parent is an only child, and, during this year’s sessions, many people have been calling on the government to completely lift the restriction on a second child. I wonder if this is on the government’s agenda in for family planning and, if so, is there a timetable on it?”
Li replied by saying, “For China’s population policy – and, as you said, last year we allowed married couples to have two children in some case -- we are currently conducting a comprehensive review of how this policy has been implemented. And, we will take the results, while taking China’s economic and social development and changes in our demographic structure into account, and will weigh the pros and cons, then improve and adjust our policy in accordance with the law.”
