Liu Qian attends 6th BRICS Health Ministers Meeting

Liu Qian, vice-minister of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, attended the 6th BRICS Health Ministers Meeting in New Delhi, India from December 15 to 16. The BRICS countries are Russia, China, Brazil, India and South Africa.

Liu introduced the "Healthy China 2030" project and China's National Plan on Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the meeting. He said that the Chinese government closely focuses on development of the health sector and cooperation under the BRICS mechanism. China will accelerate the implementation of the Goa Declaration's health consensus. He stressed that the BRICS mechanism has been increasingly improved in recent years. The BRICS countries should deepen cooperation in medical staff exchange, mutual learning through medical experience, cooperation between technical institutions and global health initiatives, jointly contributing to the implementation of the sustainable development goals in the health sector, he added. 

The meeting, organized by India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, released a Delhi Declaration and passed cooperative plans on health monitoring systems, antimicrobial resistance, non-infectious diseases, pharmaceutical research and research on tuberculosis, AIDS and malaria. It decided that the 7th BRICS Health Ministers Meeting will be held in China in 2017.

Also taking part in the meeting were Jagat Prakash Nadda, Indian Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Kostennikov Dmitry, the Russian Federation Deputy Minister of Health, and officials from South Africa, Brazil, the WHO and other international organizations.
