[China in WHA] Chinese wisdom in chronic disease prevention and control reaches the world
"Clinical guidelines for the prevention and control of chronic diseases released by China in the past were mostly based on the research achievements of North America and Western Europe, and lacked local medical evidence," said Li Liming, professor of the School of Public Health, Peking University. Peking University began cooperating with the University of Oxford on Prospective Study of Chronic Diseases in China (CKB) in 2004.
Based on research into the influence of the environment, personal life styles, physical condition and other elements of chronic diseases, CKB investigated and began long-term follow-up of five Chinese cities and five rural areas involving more than 510,000 people.
Since 2015, CKB's research achievements have been published in the world's top four medical journals such as the Lancet.
CKB's achievements continue to provide important sources of high quality etiological evidence and are a basis for developing strategies and guidelines for the prevention and treatment of major chronic diseases.
Jiang Lixin, vice president of Fuwai Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, believes that the experiences that China can offer to the world are a good guide for government policy, technical support by medical institutions and supervision by public health institutions. Internet plus artificial intelligence technology also provides intelligent diagnosis and treatment assistant tools and patient management platforms at the community level.
"Chronic disease prevention institutions and scholars should more actively participate in the WHO and other international organizations, contributing China’s wisdom and experience to global chronic disease control," he noted.
The chronic disease prevention skills of Chinese regions with different economic development status have extensive reference value for the countries of Asia and Africa involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.
