PPD president calls for more South-South cooperation in population and development

Li Bin, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Consultative Conference, attended the 16th International Inter-Ministerial Conference on South-South Cooperation in Population and Development and the 24th Board Meeting of Partners in Population and Development (PPD) as the president in Tunis from Sept 3 to 4.

The theme of the conference was consolidating the gains and reaffirming the commitments for the achievement of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action (PoA) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 Agenda.

Li, China’s representative on the PPD Board, delivered a speech at the launch ceremony. She spoke highly of the important progress made by the board members of the PPD in the past twenty-five years since the adoption of the PoA and introduced China's policy of upholding comprehensive policy-making on population and development and actively promoting people's health.

She called upon PPD's board members to continue to strengthen South-South cooperation in the field of population and development and to propel the construction of the partner relationship and commit to the PoA of the ICPD SDGs 2030 Agenda.

Attendees included Touray, vice-president of Gambia, Maleque, health minister of Bangladesh, representatives of member countries on the PPD Board and guest countries, delegates and experts of the United Nations Population Fund and the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation.

Yu Xuejun, vice-minister of China’s National Health Commission, participated in the conference.
