The global vaccine summit was held on the evening of June 4 via video link. Premier Li Keqiang delivered a video speech and Ma Xiaowei, minister of China’s National Health Commission, participated in the event. Other participants included representatives from different countries, relevant United Nations (UN) agencies, intergovernmental international organizations, non-governmental organizations and private sectors.
In addition to Premier Li, leaders from over 30 countries, including Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and heads of international organizations such as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, also delivered video speeches.
All sides hailed the positive progress made by the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) in expanding children’s immunization coverage and protecting the health of the population, and said that they will continue to provide financial support to the GAVI to improve vaccine accessibility and affordability in the next five years. According to the summit, another 300 million children will be covered in the planned immunization program. Moreover, they also called for the GAVI to contribute to the development, production and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.
