NHFPC and five other ministries jointly safeguard medication safety for children
Dosage forms and specifications of drugs applicable to children should, in accordance with relevant regulations, be included in the reimbursement coverage of the basic medical insurance system. Production enterprises of pediatric drugs should be given prioritized support to do product upgrades and technological renovation of production lines. An early warning mechanism for drug shortage should be established. Such measures such as pricing, procurement support, designated production and storage should be taken in an integrated manner to ensure the supply of drugs are clinically essential, likely to face shortage, and used in very small quantities.
In terms of upgrading the rational administration of drugs in clinical practice and comprehensive evaluation capabilities, it is stipulated that the academic advantages of specialized societies or associations should be fully made use of. Experience in administrating drugs in clinical practice and data on safe use of drugs should be summed up so as to shape a consensus in the whole industry. A guideline for administering pediatric drugs should be developed. At the same time, in the case of drugs that have been used for many years in clinical practice and whose package inserts fail to give data on medication on children, efforts should be made to improve relevant data so as to guide enterprises to do R&D and application of new drugs and revise the package inserts appropriately. The comprehensive assessment system of clinical medication on children and the data bank of clinical usage should be established. Data on medication for children should be processed, analyzed and comprehensively assessed on a regular basis.
In addition, in the Opinions, work requirements in such aspects as the guarantee of medication quality and safe administration, the standardization of prescription behavior, the promotion of the strong points of traditional Chinese medicine in pediatrics, a stronger publicity on rational administration of drugs and health education and trainings are clearly defined.
