2014 Eastern family physicians forum focuses on primary health
The 2014 Eastern family physicians forum was held from July 5-6 in Shanghai. It was hosted by the Community Health Association of China (CHAC), the Shanghai Medical Association and its branch of general medicine. Themed “the new era of community healthcare—the practice and exploration of family doctor,” the forum invited WONCA (the World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Association of General Practitioners/Family Physicians) and more than 60 general medical experts from Britain and Canada to join the event. Relevant people in charge of the department of Primary Health at the NHFPC attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.
Family doctors were introduced to China in the 1980s. With 30 years of development, the specialty has become a highlight of Chinese primary health. Since the State Council released the Opinion on Setting up General Practitioners System in 2011, the general practitioners service has been implemented in urban and rural areas through organizing healthcare teams to offer services by house call, hotline, Weibo and WeChat.
At present, the Chinese general practitioner system is still in an exploration stage that is short of general practitioners and requires improved service. The medical insurance, grading diagnosis and treatment systems haven’t effectively linked up with the general practitioner system, which restricts the upgrade of primary healthcare service. China will increase input, deepen healthcare reform and strengthen general practitioner training, building a good occupational environment for general practitioners and offering quality healthcare services for residents.
