China takes the lead in aiding West Africa in its fight against Ebola
When Ebola first out broke in Liberia, China offered Liberia medical aid worth 160,000 dollars. Recently, Chinese president Xi Jinping sent a consolatory letter to Liberian President Sirleaf about the Ebola epidemic. Later, China offered 1.6 million dollars-worth of medical supplies and dispatched a Chinese medical experts team and public health professionals to help Liberia fight against Ebola. When some foreign medical teams withdrew from the country, the Chinese medical team still stuck to its post.
“The Chinese government and people moved me deeply,” Sirleaf said to Zhang Yue, China's Ambassador to Liberia. We would like to thank our international partners who are giving Liberia a hand in fighting against Ebola. China is taking a lead among the countries offering assistance, which fully demonstrates that it is a true friend," said Sirleaf.
For a long time, Chinese and African people have been treating each other sincerely. When the earthquakes hit Wenchuan, Sichuan province in 2008 and Yushu, Qinghai province in 2010, African countries including Liberia offered selfless support to the Chinese people. Not long ago, after learning that Ludian county in Yunnan province was struck by an earthquake, President Sirleaf sent a consolatory letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Chinese people, even as she was busy in fighting against the Ebola epidemic.
On August 11, the special plane for shipping humanitarian aid arrived at Roberts International Airport in Liberia. Sylvester Grigsby, the acting foreign minister of Liberia, the director of general affairs, and senior officials of the United Nations Mission to Liberia greeted the plane.
On August 12, President Sirleaf led the acting foreign minister, interior minister, health minister, information minister, minister without portfolio, and harbor master, as well as senators and military senior officials who attended the handover ceremony of the aid supplies. President Sirleaf picked up an infrared thermometer and looked at it carefully; she said that it is badly needed in her country. Chinese emergent humanitarian aid is an encouragement for Liberia to fight against Ebola.
President Sirleaf said that China is Liberia’s good partner, which always supports Liberia’s development and offers assistance. The ongoing Ebola epidemic is a disaster for Liberia. China, although it was hit by a severe earthquake, still offered a large number of medical supplies in the shortest possible time to support Liberia. Sirleaf asked Zhang Yue to convey the Liberian people’s gratitude to Chinese president Xi Jinping and the Chinese people.
Grigsby told Zhang that President Sirleaf had not delivered the speech according to the original draft of the speech prepared ealier; what she said came totally from the bottom of her heart.
