Li Bin meets with WHO, WBG and UNPFA officials
Li Bin, minister of the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC), met with WHO Director-General Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun, World Bank (WBG) President Jim Yong Kim, and United Nations Population Fund(UNFPA)Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin, on Sep 22, to exchange views on the prevention of Ebola in West Africa, joint research on health care reform, and cooperation in population and development.
The meeting took place during the 69th UN General Assembly Special Session on the follow-up to the Program of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development.
When meeting with Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun, Li Bin said that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the prevention and control of Ebola in West Africa. President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang have made important instructions, with Vice-Premier Liu Yandong holding a special meeting to arrange prevention and control preparations. China has already established a mechanism which involves many departments carrying out analysis together. It has also worked out a contingency plan, management scheme and technical documents, as well as taken measures such as training for health professionals, port health quarantine, health monitoring for people concerned, diagnostic reagents, drug research and development, and publicity.
At the same time, China has provided goods, material and cash, along with the sending of medical expert groups to Africa to help with detection and observation. China is willing to make a positive contribution to the control of the infection under the coordination of the United Nations World Health Organization.
Li expressed China’s gratitude to the World Bank and WHO for their support and the implementation of China’s health reform research. She hoped the results could help formulate China’s health and family planning as well as a health care reform plan in the "13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020)".
When meeting with Babatunde, Li appreciated the important role of the UNPFA in promoting international cooperation in population and development, and said that she hoped to seek cooperation in reproductive health, population aging, teenagers and migrant populations. China will continue to support South-South cooperation in population field for more constructive results.
