Cui Li, vice-minister of the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC), led a supervision group made up of officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Ministry of Public Security; the Ministry of Commerce; and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine to inspect Ebola prevention work in Guangzhou from October 22 to 26, ensuring the smooth convocation of the China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair).

The supervision group inspected the airport; checked out the areas and measures for inspection and quarantine, body temperature monitoring and medical investigation; inspected Guangzhou Eighth People’s Hospital’s fever clinic and negative pressure isolation wards to learn about the treatment procedure and measures; learned about the management procedure and measures for purchasers from Ebola-affected countries at the Canton Fair venue; and paid a visit to the gathering place for Africans in Yuexiu district of Guangzhou to learn about the management situation about people from Ebola-affected countries.

The supervision group held a special meeting for Ebola prevention during the Canton Fair. Officials in charge of Guangdong province, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan and Dongguan, as well as representatives from Guangdong’s units for Ebola cooperative prevention and control attended the meeting. After listening to the work report of the Guangdong provincial government and relevant departments, the supervision group highly praised their preparation for preventing Ebola during the Canton Fair.

As for problems that appeared during the inspection, the supervision group gave advice and asked that the Guangdong provincial governments at all levels pay great attention to these problems and take measures to solve them. The local governments and the organizer of the Canton Fair should take their responsibilities and cooperate with the departments of public security, quality supervision, inspection and quarantine as well as health and family planning departments.

Governments of Guangdong province, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Foshan are improving their prevention work against Ebola based on advice put forward by the supervision group.
