Co-organized by the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the senior seminar of Partners in Population and Development was held in Taicang, Jiangsu province, from November 30 to December 1. It sought to better carry out the proposal put forward by the strategic plan for south-south cooperation. Wang Pei’an, vice-minister of the NHFPC, attended the seminar and delivered a speech. Kate Gilmore, deputy executive director of the UNFPA; Meleis , secretary-general of the International Planned Parenthood Federation; Dr. Thomas, executive director of Partners in Population and Development; and relevant officials from relevant nations, international organizations and institutions also attended the seminar.

Wang said in his speech that the Chinese government has made significant achievements in bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the population field with other developing countries. The Chinese government will continue to cooperate with developing countries in policy dialogue, experience sharing, ability construction, technology exchange and product safety.

The seminar adopted the “Taicang Proposal”, which aims at deepening south-south cooperation in the population field. The proposal pointed out that nowadays 86 percent of the world’s population is living in developing countries. The economic development of these countries provides a good chance for Partners in Population and Development. The proposal stressed establishing the south-south cooperative partnership; urged the UNFPA to play a leading role in south-south cooperation in the population field; and appealed to strengthen research, monitoring and data analysis in the population field in south-south cooperation.

The seminar was co-organized by the China training center of reproductive health and family care.
