Beijing hosts national HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment work conference
The national work conference on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment was held in Beijing on Dec 8, 2014. The meeting conveyed important instructions from Premier Li Keqiang on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment and the spirit of the second plenary session of the State Council's committee on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. Reports on the overall epidemic situation; implementation of the 2011-2015 Action Plan to Curb, Prevent and Treat HIV/AIDS in China; and traditional Chinese medicine development in treating the epidemic were made at the meeting. Major deployments were made for future work. Wang Guoqiang, vice-minister of the NHFPC and head of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, attended the meeting and delivered a speech.

Wang pointed out that HIV/AIDS prevention and control work has achieved positive results, but still faces new problems and challenges. He asked family planning and health departments nationwide, as well as traditional Chinese medicine administrations, to earnestly carry out deployment by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council; improve awareness of the importance, urgency and complexity of HIV/AIDS prevention and control work; enhance cohesion; and overcome difficulties to achieve new victories.

Wang stressed that next year is the last year to implement the 2011-2015 action plan. All regions should focus on major problems, find out reasons behind failures, and take powerful measures to ensure prevention and treatment goals can be completed. Wang asked relevant parties to strengthen epidemic source management, strive to control new infections, enhance treatment and relief work as well as control of key areas and focus groups, contain the rapid rise of the epidemic, vigorously strengthen publicity and education, create a good social and public opinion atmosphere for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, make full use of traditional Chinese medicine, establish and improve a work mechanism integrating Chinese and Western medicines, consolidate concepts of the rule of law, and push ahead the prevention and control process in accordance with the law.
