Cui stressed that the total population of the ASEAN, China, Japan and Korea account for a quarter of the global population. The outbreak of Ebola is a challenge to this region’s public health. It is crucial to strengthen regional cooperation and carry out effective prevention and response. Cui put forward five suggestions on further strengthening cooperation between the ASEAN and China, Japan and Korea on Ebola prevention and control. First, she hoped the international community, especially developed countries, can provide more support and aid to West African countries. Second, it should carry out the common views of the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN and China, Japan and Korea health ministers’ meeting . Third, it should improve the relevant system to strengthen information exchange and sharing. Fourth, it should strengthen coordination and push forward cooperation between different departments in order to build a prevention line in the region. Fifth, every country should strengthen the public health system, and China is willing to cooperate with the countries of the region and provide support in public health staff training.

All parties attending the meeting spoke highly of China’s contribution to West African countries in fighting against Ebola. The meeting agreed that countries within the region should implement the International Health Regulations; strengthen cooperation in new emerging and re-emerging contagious diseases under the framework of the ASEAN and China, Japan and Korea; and cope with Ebola together. The meeting also approved the joint communiqué and framework strategic plan.

The senior officials’ conference of the ASEAN Plus Three Health Ministers’ Special Meeting was held on December 14, which further exchanged ideas about strengthening Ebola response in global, regional and national levels.

People in charge of the NHFPC’s Health Emergency Response Office, Department of International Cooperation, and Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention were members of the delegation.
