No.1 President Xi Jinping inspects health center of Shiye town

On December 13, 2014, President Xi Jinping inspected the health center in Jiangsu province’s Shiye town. He said that national health is a necessity of a comprehensively well-off society. He stressed that medical resources should be distributed more to rural areas in order to push forward the equalization of basic public service, providing convenient, effective and inexpensive healthcare service for local people. The Party committee and local governments at all levels should care more about medical staff to allow them to focus on medical work. The medical workers should pay more attention to their medical career and strengthen professional ethnics, making contributions to people’s health.

No. 2 Pilot work for county-level public hospitals reform is carried out nationwide

The second batch of county-level public hospitals reform was launched in April 2014. The batch added 700 new pilot counties and cities based on the first batch’s 311 counties and cities. Local governments can select 352 counties and cities as provincial pilots. It has reached 1,363 counties and cities in total, accounting for 68 percent of the nation’s counties and cities and covering a population of 500 million people.

No.3 China carries out two-child policy nationwide

The State Council held a teleconference on national family planning work on February 27, 2014, to make deployments on improving family planning policy and future work. At present, the two-child policy has been carried out in many cities, and nearly 1 million couples have applied to have a second child.

No.4 China fights Ebola

Ebola broke out in West Africa in March 2014. China set up a preventive working system made up of 22 departments including the NHFPC to cope with Ebola hemorrhagic fever. On one hand, China made preparations to prevent Ebola break outs in the country. On the other hand, the Chinese government helped West African countries fight Ebola. In total, it has provided 750 million yuan worth of humanitarian aid to 13 African countries, dispatched more than 600 medical experts to West African Ebola-affected areas, helped Sierra Leone build a laboratory, and assisted Liberia to establish a treatment center.
