China holds International Symposium on HIV Prevention and Control

The International Symposium on HIV Prevention and Control in China, organized by the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC), wrapped up in Beijing on Nov 14.
Wang Guoqiang, director of the HIV/AIDS prevention and control office under the State Council and vice-minister of the NHFPC, summarized China’s progress in the field and pointed out problems that need to be solved during the two-day event.
He called for sound implementation of the action plan of HIV/AIDS prevention in China under the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20).
UNAIDS Executive Director and Under Secretary General of the United Nations Luiz Loures spoke highly of China’s political commitment and excellent leadership in regards to HIV prevention and control, especially in the prevention of HIV transmission by illegal drug injections.
He suggested that China continues to keep a sustainable and increasing effort in the field and work closely with social organizations.
Gottfried Hirnschall, director of the World Health Organization's Department of HIV-AIDS and Global Hepatitis Programme, said China shows extraordinary leadership in HIV testing and treatment.
He called for more efforts in prevention and intervening measures.
A variety of topics - covering global experiences, involvement of social institutions, and innovation and scientific development - were discussed at the meeting.
Representatives from international organizations and social institutions, and experts from home and abroad attended the symposium.
