The National Health Commission (NHC) held a meeting on school health promotion on Dec 7, 2018 in Beijing.
The meeting focused on the health of children, especially the prevention and control of myopia , and the emphases and measures to be taken as next steps.
Li Bin, vice-minister of the NHC, emphasized that schools health promotion should be prioritized as it is a critical part of the establishment of a Healthy China and is deeply connected to the nation’s future.
Various measures should be implemented including comprehensively strengthening infectious disease prevention and control in schools, monitoring students’ health and intervening as necessary, inspecting school hygiene and health education, said Li.
He added that professional capabilities of health services organizations and individuals should be improved, and the schools’ health promotion should be a key point of the public hygiene services system.
In addition, the comprehensive plan to prevent shortsightedness among children and teenagers should be coordinated between related departments, supervision and examination should be strengthened, and responsibilities of various levels of departments should be clear to ensure orderly school health promotion.
