Zeng Yixin, vice-minister of the National Health Commission (NHC), made an inspection tour of South China's Hainan province from Mar 20 to 23.

Zeng and his group visited county-and village-level health institutions in the province's Baoqing county and Wuzhishan city as well as impoverished households. They talked with the medical workers face to face to learn about their daily work and salaries in the basic health institutions, and the families in poverty to ask their advice on health poverty alleviation.

Zeng's group opened two symposiums, planning further steps in Hainan's health poverty alleviation and deepening of reform.

Zeng affirmed the achievements Hainan province has made in the above two fields, adding that the province should coordinate the two tasks, accept and implement the suggestions proposed by the central inspection team of poverty relief, and be determined to end poverty.

Rural medical workers, the nearest protectors of villagers' health, aren't alternatives to a good solution; they are paramount to health poverty alleviation, said Zeng. He urged that good health resources of the country need to be channeled to the grassroots and heath institutions to make sure that rural residents enjoy high quality health services and grassroots medical workers receive good salaries.

All levels of the governments of Hainan should use their advantages and innovate health service modes so that the province's health development will meet national standards as well as boast its own characteristics.
