China urges continuous efforts to control tobacco
China calls for continuous and effective tobacco control in prior to the 32nd World No Tobacco Day which falls on May 31.
Designed by the WHO, this year's World No Tobacco Day's theme is "tobacco and lung health".
In order to celebrate the no tobacco day and to publicize the harm of smoking, China's National Health Commission (NHC) and Office of the National Patriotic Health Campaign Committee urge the provincial health departments the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the Chinese Health Education Center to organize publicity activities on "no tobacco", so as to improve the public's health awareness and encourage them to live a healthy life.
The World No Tobacco Day is not be the only one day to promote activities on tobacco control. The control publicity should be continuous and offered in combination with that given on World Heart Day, World COPD Day and World Lung Cancer Day, according to the NHC.
The NHC also urged to create smoke-free environment and strengthen tobacco control legislation. The areas with the existing related laws should tighten enforcement and supervision to further protect the public from tobacco and smoke, said the NHC.
Local health authorities should encourage health institutions to develop smoking quitting services and regulate related clinics. The smoking quitting services hotline of 12320 and professional smoking quitting hotlines of 4008085531 and 4008885531 should be further promoted to be known by the public, according to the NHC.
In addition, the prevalence of tobacco smoking among China's teenagers should be continuously monitored and the capability of analyzing and using the data needs to be improved, added the HNC.
