A contact group has been set up under the State Council inter-agency task force with the approval of the CPC Central Committee. Ding Xiangyang, Deputy Secretary General of the State Council and head of the group, Yu Xuejun, Vice Minister of the National Health Commission and deputy head of the group, and the rest of the group arrived in Wuhan on the afternoon of 4 May. The group held a meeting with the principal officials of Hubei Province and Wuhan City to plan the work ahead.

The group is mainly tasked to check on and report COVID-19 containment progress in Wuhan and Hubei in a timely manner and supervise the enforcement of containment measures to help lock in the gains and prevent a resurgence. It will also keep an eye on the reopening of businesses and schools, and carry out other assignments from higher-level authorities.
