Beijing Municipal Health Commission: Over 60% of confirmed cases from outside Beijing; Nucleic acid testing lab to be set up in Xiaotangshan Hospital
At a press briefing given by the State Council inter-agency task force on 11 May, Director of the Beijing Municipal Health Commission Lei Haichao said that the first case in Beijing emerged on 19 January and the most recent one on 15 April. To date, 593 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the city. Among them, 377, or 64% of the total, are imported cases, i.e. from other parts of China or from other countries. The high proportion has much to do with the capital's national and global influence. Of the 16 COVID-19 patients currently receiving treatment in Ditan Hospital, many are international travelers who arrived in Beijing in March and April.
Lei said that domestic travelers coming to Beijing for medical treatment, except for those from medium- and high-risk regions and other specified regions, are no longer required to go through a 14-day observation at home or in designated places. Medical institutions in Beijing still require all non-emergency patients to make appointment in advance. Patients at outpatient departments and emergency rooms must have their temperatures taken, undergo necessary screening, report their medical history, and show their green code on the "Beijing Health Kit" app or their travel history. Patients at fever clinics and those hospitalized need to undergo nucleic acid testing.
According to Lei, from 16 March when it was reopened to 28 April when its last patient was discharged, the Xiaotangshan Hospital was in operation for 44 days. A total of 2,175 people were screened, including 54 confirmed cases and 27 suspected ones. None of the over 1,000 medical workers at the hospital contracted the virus, and all international travelers got properly tested. The 1,600-bed hospital can treat a fairly big number of patients. The Beijing Municipal Health Commission is considering ramping up the nucleic acid testing capacity at the hospital by setting up a major testing lab there.
