WHO: China has significant capacity to handle the latest COVID-19 cases
On 15 June, WHO expressed its confidence in China's significant capacity to handle the latest COVID-19 cases in Beijing. It also said that the organization will continue to work closely with China, provide assistance, and issue guidance internationally accordingly.
Dr Michael Ryan, Executive Director of WHO Health Emergencies Programme, said at a regular press conference that WHO has a number of epidemiologists permanently embedded in its Beijing office. They are closely watching the developments in the city and working on a day-to-day basis with colleagues at the National Health Commission, the China CDC and CDCs all around China. WHO may be supplementing its office team in China with more expertise in the coming days to help find the origin of the disease and analyze the genome sequences of the virus. It will continue to follow the disease situation in China, offer help and share information with the international community.
Maria Van Kerkhove, Technical Lead of WHO Health Emergencies Programme, emphasized that countries and regions should test, isolate, trace and quarantine contacts so that any resurgence can be picked up quickly and stamped out. Studies show that a large proportion of the population remains susceptible, so all countries need to be on alert.
