At a press conference on Beijing's COVID-19 response held on the afternoon of 24 June, Xu Hejian, Spokesperson of the Beijing Municipal Government, said that infections directly related to the Xinfadi Wholesale Market were basically under control. But at the same time, cluster cases in households and work places as well as sporadic cases in residential neighborhoods were found. The situation remains complex and allows no lowering of guard, Xu stressed.

At the press conference, Lei Haichao, Director of the Beijing Municipal Health Commission, said that 253 of the 256 confirmed cases in Beijing, or 98.8 per cent of the total, were related to Xinfadi, with the other three cases awaiting further investigation. The earliest date of showing symptoms was 4 June, and the majority of the cases (61 per cent) showed symptoms from 9 June to 15 June. At present, the situation of infections among individuals exposed to the market before its closure has shown a downward trend.

"193 of the confirmed cases are moderate, accounting for 75.4 per cent of the total, followed by 53 mild cases, taking up 20.7 per cent. There are 3 critical cases and 7 severe cases." According to Lei, compared with the domestic confirmed cases reported as of 31 March, the cases in Beijing are mostly moderate. Critical and severe cases take up only a small percentage, and conditions of patients are mostly stable, with four severe cases alleviated to moderate ones.

According to the conference, medical institutions across Beijing have been required to upgrade the level of response to prevent cluster infections in hospitals, strengthen work place disinfection and protection of medical workers. Supervision and inspection will be carried out on infection prevention and control with full coverage in the city's 79 medical institutions with fever clinics.
