Ma Xiaowei, minister of China's National Health Commission (NHC), attended the first G20 Health Ministers Meeting in 2022 via video link on June 20. Li Bin, vice-minister of the NHC, also participated in the meeting.
Ma said at the meeting that the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has brought new challenges to global pandemic prevention and control. As the first country to put forward and honor the commitment of making vaccine a global public good, China has provided over 2.2 billion vaccine doses to more than 120 countries and international organizations, he said.
China calls on all G20 countries to work together to continuously improve their global health architecture, adhere to the leadership and coordinating role of the World Health Organization (WHO), promote the coordination of health technical standards and facilitate the construction of a system for global public health goods, so as to jointly build a global community of health for all, he added.
Li introduced China's practices in coping with infectious diseases, noting that China is willing to work with all parties to safeguard global health security.
Representatives at the meeting agreed that G20 countries should strengthen cooperation, increase input into health care services, and work in solidarity to address health challenges such as COVID-19, tuberculosis prevention and control, and antimicrobial drug resistance.
Hosted by the Indonesian health ministry, the meeting welcomed over 100 participants, including representatives from the G20 members and guest countries, as well as the delegates of international organizations such as the WHO. Chinese officials from the NHC, the National Administration of Disease Prevention and Control, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs took part in the event.
