The eighth work conference of the management committee for the National Health and Family Planning Commission-Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation tuberculosis prevention and treatment cooperation project was held in Yinchuan city, Ningxia Hui autonomous region, on Sept 25, 2014.

A report on project progress from Sept 2013 and Aug 2014 was made at the meeting covering two aspects. First, the project has continued to promote the application of the MDR-TB patient diagnosis, treatment and financing management model. Second, it has carried out a comprehensive tuberculosis prevention and treatment model and summarized project achievements and experience, paving the way for future policy development.

The project management committee spoke highly of the project's achievements in discovering and managing patients, exploring tuberculosis prevention and treatment financing and payment mechanisms, establishing a prevention and treatment system based on PPM for DOTS and cooperation between health and civil affairs departments.

The meeting participants also reviewed project work budgets for the next annual report period and adjusted management committee members. They had an in-depth discussion regarding optimizing project implementation and launching new research projects. After the meeting, they reviewed the project's participant units, including the Fourth People’s Hospital of Ningxia, Yanchi county's People's Hospital and disease control center.

The NHFPC-Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation tuberculosis project began in 2009. It aimed to develop, validate and assess new tuberculosis prevention and control tools and new health service delivery, as well as strengthen the new tuberculosis control model.

After more than five years of effective implementation, the project's first phase in six provinces (cities) has been successfully concluded. The second phase covers Jiangsu, Hubei, Shaanxi and Ningxia and will promote the comprehensive tuberculosis prevention and treatment model to help formulate a new prevention and control strategy in China.

More than 20 representatives attended the meeting, from the NHFPC's international cooperation, disease prevention and control, and medical policy and management departments; the China Food and Drug Administration; the Center for Monitoring and Verification of Low Income Families; the China Center for Food and Drug International Exchange; the Beijing Office of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; and the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention's tuberculosis prevention and treatment and clinical centers.
