The city of Beijing used its National Stadium as the place to celebrate No Tobacco Day, on May 31, with the vice-minister of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, Cui Li, on hand to address the gathering, by noting that the government has been pushing smoking control legislation and 18 cities across the country have drafted regulations on it.

Cui went on to urge local departments and society at large to work together to increase public awareness of smoking control.

Wang Xiaoming, the deputy secretary general of Beijing, added, “A smoking regulation has been in effect in Beijing for a year now and there has been a significant decrease in the number of smokers and Beijing will increase law enforcement efforts for smoking control.”

Also on hand was the WHO’s representative in China, Dr Bernhard Schwartländer, who praised China’s achievement in tobacco controls, especially Beijing’s law and said that WHO is willing to cooperate with China to better protect people’s health.

Taking part in the activity were more than 500 representatives from the Health and Family Planning Commission, WHO’s China office, and related organizations.
