At the invitation of the public health sector of Guyana, Cui Li, vice-minister of the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC), met with the Prime Minister of Guyana Moses Nagamootoo and Dr. Karen Cummings, deputy health minister of Guyana.

Cui exchanged ideas with her Guyanese counterpart on health cooperation and the control and prevention of infectious diseases. On behalf of the Chinese government, Cui's delegation sent medical equipment to Guyana for free.

In the meantime, Cui also paid a special visit to China's medical team in Guyana and encouraged them to work hard at their foreign aid mission during a seminar.

Located on the northeast coast of South America, Guyana, a former British colony, is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world.

In Sept 2014, China agreed to train Guyanese doctors in medical specialties as part of a five-year deal with the South American country.

On January 15, 2015, The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation in Georgetown, capital of Guyana, and the Subei People's Hospital of Jiangsu Province in China enhanced their relationship by signing a Friendship Agreement and unveiling a plaque labeling each of them a "Friendship Hospital".

On June 27, 1972, diplomatic relations were formally established between the governments of Guyana and China, making Guyana the first English-speaking Caribbean country to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China.
