In August 2018, the number of cases of notifiable diseases reported in the Chinese mainland was 706,372, with 1,983 deaths.
Cholera, a category A infectious disease, had twelve cases and no death report. Plague, the other category A infectious disease, had no cases.
Category B infectious diseases, excluding severe acute respiratory syndrome, highly pathogenic avian influenza, H7N9 avian influenza, diphtheria, and poliomyelitis, had 320,658 cases with 1,976 deaths.
The five infectious diseases in category B with the largest number of cases were viral hepatitis, phthisis, syphilis, gonorrhea, and dysentery. They accounted for 94.00 percent of all cases in that category.
Category C infectious diseases, excluding filariasis, had 385,702 cases with seven deaths.
The first three Category C infectious diseases in terms of the number of cases were hand-foot-and-mouth disease, infectious diarrhea, and mumps, which accounted for 96.00 percent of all Category C cases.
