Ma Xiaowei, minister of the National Health Commission, meets with Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care of the UK.

The fourth China-UK Health Policy Dialogue was held in Beijing on Sept 17. Ma Xiaowei, minister of the National Health Commission (NHC), and Matt Hancock, the UK’s Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, jointly hosted the dialogue.

Ma noted that the health cooperation between China and the UK has grown rapidly as the two countries’ relationship steps into a “golden era”. Both sides should further push forward health cooperation by supporting the construction of “Healthy China” and the implementation of health care system reform in the UK in order to boost the achievement of the 2030 Global Sustainable Development Goals. Hancock spoke highly of the two countries’ relationship as well as progress in China-UK health cooperation. “The UK is willing to share experience and cooperation with China to jointly cope with the challenge of global health,” he added.

The two sides discussed public health, community-level health service systems and medical service quality. Ma and Hancock signed a memorandum of understanding between the two health authorities on patient safety.

Also taking part in the dialogue were 40 officials and representatives from relevant departments of the NHC, the Department of Health and Social Care of the UK, Public Health England and the British Embassy in Beijing.
